Art

How we Were, The Victorians, River and Rowing Museum, Henley

Chief among the essential guidelines for Family Friendly Museums in the Thames Valley Group are respect for children, the promotion of interactive pursuits and the provision of decent grub. Henley River and Rowing Museum has no problems with any of those.  more...

Howard Hodgkin, Tate Britain

Howard Hodgkin's paintings tend to polarise opinion. You either love or loathe them, these exuberant paintings overflowing with splashes, swirls, blobs and bands of colour. There are two ways of looking at them, too. One offers a purely emotional experience, the other more analytical. You can stand right up close excluding everything else, and get sucked into the joyous colour and sensuality of one work of art. Or you can stand further back and become aware of various interplays: between the painting and yourself, the viewer, and between it and other paintings in the room. Words may now come into play, perhaps taking over from the mood the gallery has created in you, as you read the title and the handbook provided to try to unravel something of what the painting represents.  more...

Treasured Textiles, Pitt Rivers Museum

My first impression was that this is a rather confused exhibition. It is composed of a seemly eclectic range of a hundred or so textiles and costumes drawn from the Pitt Rivers Museum's collection. However, as one becomes drawn into the fabulous display of craftsmanship, needlework skills, pattern and colour, confusion clears and fascination sets in.  more...

Balraj Khanna, Oxfordshire Museum

Balraj Khanna's art has its roots in the teeming energy of the Punjab. It was not until he came to read English at Oxford that his love of painting crystallized. He wondered at the art he found, but it was from his homeland that he took its bright folk art, its kites, its painted toys and its vivacity. He translated these into his own playful range of creatures that live in water, air and land - fish, birds and insects, fossils, interplanetary creatures and vessels, fireworks reminiscent of Catherine wheels and shooting stars that whirl and whiz, dip and dive, surface and plunge endlessly.  more...

Severance and Snakes on a Plane

If you go down to the woods today you're sure of a big surprise . . . Described as "The Office meets Deliverance", which turns out to be wishful thinking, Severance is a blackly humorous romp drenched in blood, set during a corporate team-building weekend from hell. Writer-director Christopher Smith, who brought carnage to the Underground in his debut Creep, ventures into the great outdoors (the Matra Hills of Hungary) for this equally vicious second feature. He certainly doesn't stint on the gore, delighting in the agonising deaths of his characters, ranging from a beheading to a human barbecue. Smith offsets the splatter with humour but doesn't strike quite the right balance, burdening his film with a split personality.  more...

Oklahoma! and Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing & Charm School

When Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein's first musical opened in March 1943, rival producer Mike Todd cast the verdict: "No girls, no gags, no chance." Yet, Oklahoma! went on to become the most influential show in Broadway history and toured for a decade before Fox produced the 1955 adaptation that is now back on general release in a sparkling new print.  more...

The Plough at Great Haseley

A rainbow marked the spot as we headed from Little Milton along the pretty road leading through open country towards the Haseleys. "What a glorious sight," I said to Rosemarie, as we took in a spectacular view of the Chilterns bathed in sunshine away in the distance to our right, and the mounting bank of black clouds ahead of us, through which the rainbow ascended. Would there be gold at its base? Of a sort, for the Plough - the object of our visit - has a distinct lustre about it.  more...
