Leader

Against, we presume

It is also no surprise to us that Thames Water is beginning its big push for a massive new reservoir in Oxfordshire with a public relations drive on the need for one. This is, after all, its weakest point.  more...

Parking passions

There was never any doubt that the public meeting arranged this week over plans to introduce charges for residents' parking in Oxford would be a fraught affair. So it proved.  more...

Letters

Spell it out in plain English

Janet Knowles, head of midwifery at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, has taught me a new definition of 'close' when she talks about the leaked plans to shut the breast-feeding clinic (Oxford Mail, September 6).  more...

Disgust and anger

I, with the vast majority of British people, totally agree with the opinions expressed by Edward Woollard (Oxford Mail, September 5).  more...

Out to lunch

Sir, I do wonder, after reading The battle of the biographers (Gray Matter, September 8), why anyone would want to read Betjeman, let alone write about him or fight over the kitsch bric-a-brac in the dead man's closets.  more...

Vigorous police crackdown needed

Sir - 'Two deaths so far this year linked to mobile phones' you reported last week. I'm surprised it isn't more. Every time I leave home - by car or on foot - I see drivers with mobiles held to their ears. Frequently it's mums with a carloads of children. White Van Man is a prime culprit. Perhaps most disconcerting are HGV drivers negotiating turns or roundabouts with one hand on the wheel and the other clutching a mobile. How do they change gear?  more...

Public ignored

Sir - I watched a fine tree being cut down in Davenant Road the other day. Perhaps it was diseased and not merely inconvenient, but of course it won't be replaced and Oxford's tree population will continue to decline.  more...

Dangerous distraction

Sir, You report (September 8) that South Oxfordshire District Council has quite rightly taken firm action against the former chairman of its own planning committee, for erecting an unpermitted dwelling in direct contravention of council policy, which the council described as "probably the biggest breach of planning controls in recent years".  more...

Missing word?

Sir, Now to be seen on buses in Oxford; ''All the best European cities have good public transport . . . like Oxford''. Fair enough , but was omission of the important word ''cheap'' deliberate?  more...

Cycling tips

Sir, Your article (September 8) shows cyclists are divided about whether the money spent on the Cowley Road has improved things. I am one of the cyclists who feels it has. But cyclists need to understand how the narrower moving traffic lanes can help them.  more...

Change of use

Sir, Mr Clinton Pugh, owner of Caf CoCo and Kazbar, (Letters, September 8) accused me of "misleading the public" and of being a "counter-productive influence" in my objections to his planning application for Dawson Street, Cowley Road (my letter, September 1).  more...

Faster rail link needed

Sir, Lorries may result in congestion on the A34 but no amount of rail investment will divert that traffic on to the railways.  more...

Heated proposal

Sir, Thank you for highlighting the importance of in-vessel composting (Report, September 8). A large scale in-vessel composting plant could be up and running in Oxfordshire in a couple of years. These composting plants are clean, produce useful compost, and generate their own heat to process our kitchen left-overs. Kitchen waste probably fills up a fifth of our bins and black bags that go to landfill.  more...

Food for the soul

Sir, Don't rip the beating heart out of our new county wildlife site. Near Abingdon lies a secretive lake where nature thrives. On foot from the leisure centre, eastward on the Sustrans path, you will reach the gates to heaven or hell in ten minutes.  more...

Shabby affair

Sir, Given the appalling decision to allow RWE npower to pump thousands of tonnes of ash into such a beautiful and environmentally sensitive site that is Radley lakes, instead of obliging them to recycle their waste like we have to do, I believe that we are entitled to some answers from our political representatives on the county council!  more...

Environmental award

Sir, Many thanks for publishing the story of Woodstock's success in the Thames and Chilterns in Bloom Association (September 8).  more...

Time to apologise?

Sir, Has Rt Hon Andrew Smith MP apologised? I presume not. It is now common knowledge that the war on Iraq was unjustified and ill conceved.  more...

Unamusing theme

Sir, Do you think the creators of the Jack the Ripper musical would find the theme so amusing if it were gay men/black people/children being terrorised, rather than women? I suppose their next venture will be a comedy about 9/11.  more...

Divided city

Sir, Perhaps it is time for the provision of an eight to ten-seat 'buggy' to run between Debenhams and Queen Street to help the aged, infirm and lazy to reach parts of our divided city centre more easily, and to provide a link between the northerly and southern bus routes. Cornmarket is a long haul without.  more...

Dark day for democracy

Sir, I am very happy that the city council is making moves towards tackling the problem of litter that lets Oxford down so badly. However, in their enthusiasm, they appear to be including leafletting in this drive. The freedom to distribute political leaflets is an essential part of our democracy, and the two issues shouldn't be confused.  more...
