LLOYD GEORGE AND CHURCHILL Richard Toye (Macmillan, £25)This impressive and well-researched biography starts with the bald claim that David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill were the two most important figures in 20th-century British politics. While no one can dispute Churchill's place in the pantheon, Toye puts the case for Lloyd George's inclusion and the book is a timely reminder of a dynamic if flawed politician, now largely forgotten. more...
THE EYE OF THE STORM Catherine Jones (Severn House, £18.99)Former SS man Jochen Peiper was murdered on July 13, 1976, in France by a single shot from a British Service revolver. What I Believe Anthony Kenny (Continuum, £8.99) When it comes to philosophy, former Oxford Pro Vice Chancellor Sir Anthony Kenny is no lightweight. He has written more than 40 books on the subject and having obtained a doctorate in philosophy at Oxford University in 1963, gone on to lecture in philosophy at Exeter College, Trinity College and Balliol College where he became master. He was also Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Oxford until he retired in 2001. His latest book engages on both intellectual and emotional levels and is devoid of footnotes, as the thoughts he expresses are the outcome of many years of reading listening and talking. They are, indeed, summaries of a lifetime's philosophical reflection and as such offer substantial rewards to any reader who may also be pondering the nature of morality, religion, the existence of God, capital punishment and even happiness and death. He admits that it is the possibility of continuing after death that he finds troubling. It's not just that he would find annihilation vastly preferable to the torments of the dammed so lovingly described by Dante, but that even painless perpetuity would be appalling. Because of his relaxed approach, the book offers all those who have struggled to come to terms with the big issues within philosophy and religion a chance to confront the big questions comfortably. more...

When I noticed that barramundi featured on the fish menu, I almost squealed with excitement. In Australia (where I lived for ten years) this fish was considered the king of all fish. It's the fish around which aboriginal dream-time legends abound. Sir - The walks through gorgeous countryside around Oxford and Bladon have been smeared by the litter rats so they are fast turning into landfills of rubbish of all sorts; many prime sites are starred with the cardboard residue of entire picnics. There were in the packed audience at the New Theatre on Tuesday, I am sure, many fans who would have preferred to hear the Waterboys exploring more of the 'folkier' side of their impressive repertoire. Magnificent, powerful, gripping, moving . . . last Sunday's performance of Tosca by the Chisinau National Opera was all of these things, and more. Producer Ellen Kent has brought out the melodramatic aspects of the story to great effect, drawing on the fact that Puccini himself was inspired by a performance of Sardou's play La Tosca, in which the great Sarah Bernhardt played the title role. The sumptuous sets and costumes form the dramatic framework for this largely traditional presentation, and the fact that you can see the famous dome of St Peter's from each of the three different scenes gives the whole a sense of continuity. The only disappointment was the lack of fake blood, particularly noticeable after the stabbing of Scarpia and the firing squad scene at the end. more...
