How could I refuse a press trip to meet beekeeper Jim Chambers, organised by the Honey Association, particularly when it was to take place in a field just a mile from the King William pub, Ipsden, where we went on to enjoy a honey tasting followed by an excellent lunch. Ipsden is a rather secret little village with a population of just 300, which lies just outside Wallingford. It's so small you have to really search for it on the map as it's tucked away in an rural area off the A4074, or A4130 if travelling from Wallingford. As Ipsden is designated as an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it's certainly an ideal spot to keep beehives, as we soon discovered. more...

Sir - I am writing to express my dismay at the proposals being made by the Government about services provided by GP practices, that are likely to be butchered should polyclinics, extended hours and the cessation of dispensaries in surgeries come into being. more...
Sir - Alan Armitage's feeble attempts at political points scoring in last week's letters, illustrates rather well why the previous administration failed to improve the council's leisure services while they were in office. Faced with a complex set of problems that relate to both management and the construction of an optimum sustainable facility mix, the Lib Dems became fixated on privatisation/externalisation as the 'solution'. more...
Sir - Councillor Price's letter regarding the organization of leisure services (May 23) is much more moderate and constructive than his outburst (May 16)when he called staff shortages at Hinksey pool "absurd" and "unacceptable. more...
Sir - I can assure Ms MacMenamin (Letters, May 30) that Oxford City Council is unanimously in favour of 20mph limits in residential streets. I have been working with various organisations and groups of residents to put as much pressure as possible on the county council, for it is they who have the power to bring this in. more...
Sir - Given that the Labour Party voted for the alternate weekly collection of waste in the first place, it comes as no surprise that their major overhaul will reduce bags and bins, but will not restore a system that would be more appropriate for our densely-inhabited city areas. more...

Sir - Oxford Council Leader Bob Price said transformation of management of leisure facilities is " one of the top priorities for the new city executive board, and we aim to take decisions on future strategy" (Letters, May 23). Sir - An eco-town, any town, needs three basic resources: energy (gas and electricity), transport links, and water. more...
Sir - In your article, Oxford Fails in Cycle Fund Bid (May 30) you quote Owen South, Oxfordshire's senior transport planner: "In Oxford we are continuing to invest and are planning a number of schemes to improve the continuity and visibility of the cycle network. It is plainly utterly wrong to say the council does not care about cycling." more...
Sir - Cycling for England would not say why the county's application for a grant has not been shortlisted (Report and Editorial Comment, May 30). This does not prevent the representative of one cycling organisation asserting that it is because the council has failed to show 'care and competence for cyclists in the past' when evidence to the contrary can be seen all over the city. If the county has such a bad reputation it has been created by the constant complaining of cyclists, presumably acting on the principle that the squeaking wheel gets the oil. This strategy has backfired. They could more justifiably have drawn attention to what has been achieved in Oxford to show a grant was merited. more...
